FOURTEEN MEMBERS of Rochdale Harriers competed in this year’s National Cross Country Championships.

The ladies course was 5 miles and the men’s 7.7 miles, all in Herrington Country Park, Sunderland.  Cold easterly winds, ground snow and deep mud made the conditions extremely difficult on the day.

Rochdale’s sole female competitor, Anna Blomfield, posted 41 min 18 sec.  This placed her 214th amongst England’s finest lady cross country runners.

The men’s team was stronger than last year and this showed through in the results.  The Club’s first counter, Phil Williams, posted 53 min 05 sec to take 376th position. Next was Ian Roberts, 410th, lapping his father Phil on the third and final circuit.  Nick Barton’s marathon training elevated him up the field to finish as third counter, with Ian Stainthorpe, Nick Walsh and Mark Walker constituting the Club’s six man team.  Kristian Robinson, Wesley Young and John Mayall followed to complete the nine man team.

John Mayall from the Harriers commented “We last run this course in 2007 and the going was good.  Today the conditions were the worst I’ve known for the Nationals.  But it was the same for everyone and we saw some great performances from the Rochdale men.  Nick Barton and Wes Young in particular had the races of their lives”.

In the final reckoning, the Rochdale’s six man team finished 56th on the day, some 64 places higher than last year.  The nine-man team achieved 32nd position.
