ON SATURDAY the harriers travelled to Chorley to take part in the Red Rose cross country fixture at Astley Park. This was a Ďproperí cross country course, with hills, a stream crossing and a mud bath to add interest. The star performance of the day came from Emily Brown who finished 2nd in the under 11ís. Summer Tootall and Dervla Moore combined with Emily to place the under 11ís girls team 11th.
Jenny Brown had a tremendous race and was first Senior Rochdale lady home in 24th position. New member Kay Welsby (27th) just pipped veteran runner Anna Blomfield (31st) to the finish and the three ladies secured 6th place for Rochdale. Anna combined with Jan Needham and Jill Butterworth to place the ladies veteran team in 7th position overall.
The menís team was missing most of its fastest runners on the day, with the exception of Ian Roberts. Ianís current run of top form continued as he took 9th position overall.
For Richard Stirzaker this was his first cross country race since school days. He finished next for the club in 107th position, just two places ahead of Paul Leary. The two encouraged each other round the course, resulting in great performances from both.
Neil Hirst lead John Mayall for the first 9 kilometers. With only 0.5 kilometres to go, John just managed to pass Neil and then took on Chorley's Paul Wareing and Paul Bass in an almighty sprint to the finish line. Steve Leak was the sixth menís counter and together the team took 14th position.
