THE FELL SECTION of Rochdale Harriers raced in their own back yard last weekend, attending the Edenfield Fell race on Jubilee Sunday. Braving conditions referred to locally as “summer”, the team ran the 6.3 mile /1,500ft ascent course on a bitterly cold, wet and windy day. The race started at the Edenfield Cricket Club and began with a long climb up to Cowpe Lowe on Scout Moor. Then it was up past Waugh’s Well and over to Whittle Pike. Following a tussocky and boggy descent, the competitors were treated to calf-burning scramble back up and then a sprint back down to the Cricket Club. After under-performing at Three Peaks, Mark Walker’s form on the fells has sky rocketed. At Edenfield he ran an awesome race to take 16th position (57 min 44 sec). Next home was Nick Walsh in 59:27 (22nd) and then ever-improving Neil Hirst in 60:06 (26th). Solicitor Matt Cox had one his best fell races ever, posting 65 min 40 sec to finish 48th. The results for members of Rochdale Harriers were as follows: 16 Mark Walker, 57.44; 22 Nicholas Walsh, 59.27; 26 Neil Hirst, 60.06; 35 John Mayall, 62.10; 44 Kristian Robinson, 63.29; 48 Matthew Cox, 65.40; 59 Kevin McGilvray, 70.00; 68 Phil Roberts, 74.05.
