Trafford 10K

13th March 2011

THE ROCHDALE HARRIERS Road Race Club Championship got off to a flying start with its first fixture – the Trafford 10K.

The flat course in Partington attracted an exceptionally strong field, including several Kenyan athletes and many of the UK’s running elite.

The race was won by Kenyan Edwin Kipkorir in an incredible time of 29 min 12 sec.  The first finisher from the North West was Rochdale’s elite track runner David Proctor.  He took 11th place overall and ran a lifetime best of 30 minutes 32 seconds, shaving 2 seconds off his previous best.

Rochdale’s next finisher was ‘Fast Phil’ Williams, posting 33 min 21 sec.  Ian Roberts followed in 36 min 31 sec, while Jon Lane continued his recent fine form with a personal best time of 37 min 13 sec.

Hard training and regular racing enabled Nick Barton to dip under the 40 minute barrier with his time of 39:55.  This was an incredible 10 minutes faster than he ran in the Rochdale 10K only eight months ago.

Junior athlete Jack Walsh ran the first 5K very fast and then suffered in the second half, posting a respectable 40:32  His father Nick Walsh was 12 seconds behind in 40:44.

Paul McGlynne ran in stealth mode, without club colours.   In what was his second race he posted an impressive 41:27.  John Mayall, unaware that Paul was so close, finished 11 seconds behind (41:38) which represented a personal best by 3.5 minutes.

Rochdale’s fastest lady was veteran athlete Anna Blomfield.  She achieved 43 min 33 sec, making her the current ladies leader in the Club Championship.

Danielle Beard and Steve Wild were neck-and-neck as they turned the final corner towards the inflatable blue arch finishing line.  Both athletes are exceptional on the sprint, but Steve Wild just pipped Danielle to the finish line (44:23 and 44:25 respectively).  Both were delighted as this was the first time either had got under 45 minutes.   Wes Young posted 47 min 58 sec.

Meanwhile Brenda Robinson travelled to Birmingham to compete in the British Masters Athletics Cross Country Championships.  She just missed out on the medals, finishing fourth in the female veteran 65 category.

Jill Butterworth ran in the Two Piers Half Marathon at Lytham St. Annes.  She was the 9th lady finishers with a pleasing time of 1:45:39.

Chris Hill’s preparations for the London Marathon were boosted by a great performance in the Spen 20 Mile race at Cleckheaton.  He completed the hilly course in 2 hr 24 min 21 sec.  This was over 15 minutes faster than his previous personal best set on a flat course.
