COLIN ROBINSON’s contribution to athletics and his forthcoming 70th birthday were celebrated by a hilly 5K race in Littleborough on the 31st March.

Over 200 athletes from around the North West turned out on a bitterly cold evening to mark the event.  Colin’s athletics achievements include National and International Junior Cross Country Champion, running for England at Senior level and winning many races, including The Three Peaks.   Many of the Club’s records set by Colin still stand.  Today Colin is a key official at most local races and represents Rochdale on various athletics committees.

It was fitting tribute on the evening that both the men’s and ladies races were won by members of Rochdale Harriers.  Law student Matt Proctor clocked 15 min 56 seconds, a little slower than his best due to tired legs from a 10K personal best (30 min 41 sec) only a few days earlier.

Carly Needham marked her return to form with a stunning two minute lead to win the ladies race in 17 min 49 sec.

Second and third place in the men’s race went to Sam Kerfoot-Roberts and Ben Crowther, both of Halifax Harriers.

Jill Butterworth made her debut race for the Harriers with an impressive win in the female veteran 35 category.  She clocked 21 min 45 sec. Meanwhile John Cook won the male veteran 50 category in 18 min 38 sec.

Rochdale’s fastest junior was 14 year old Jack Walsh.   He posted 19 min 03 sec to beat his father Nick by 43 seconds.  Lucy Moore was Rochdale’s fastest junior girl, posting 21 min 52 sec.

All race finishers won a limited edition mug to mark the occasion.

The results for members of Rochdale Harriers were as follows:
