THE RED ROSE Cross Country league
fixture at Bury last Saturday was attended by a record number of
athletes, including over 150 junior cross country runners. Consistent training on track and
hills paid dividends for Rochdale’s Carly Needham. Carly followed her victory the previous week in the SELCC
league with yet another win, this time with a comfortable 45 second lead
over second place Rachel Jones from Salford Harriers. The ladies team race was won by
Horwich and Rochdale took second place. The Radcliffe team finished
third and Bury AC were eighth. Carly
Needham and Josefa Terim were the first two counters for the Rochdale
team. The third counter
position was up for grabs by either Huma Rahman or Anna Blomfield, with
Huma eventually consolidating her short lead with a convincing final
sprint. Rochdale’s Liam Smith and Jack
Garmory of Bolton United Harriers had a tremendous battle in the under
11’s cross country race. Smith
dug deep, and just managed to fend off Garmory in a hard-fought race
that wasn’t settled until the finishing line. Smith won by 1 second. The
senior men’s team finished ninth overall in a large and highly
competitive field. The
male counters in finishing order were Kris Robinson, Ian Roberts, Chris Leach, Phil Scarr,
Brian Moore and Paul Leary. (Picture by Mark Walker) The next cross country fixture is on 11th November at Broadoak (SELCC League).
