ROCHDALE HARRIERS entered four runners for this year’s Windgather Fell race near Buxton.

The beautiful course started at Burbage and took competitors on a 13.5 mile journey through the Goyt Valley, alongside Errwood and Fernilee reservoirs, then up and over numerous hills including the most challenging - 1800ft Shining Tor.   The route is unique for its springy dirt paths and the sound of clinking metal against rock from the nearby climbers.

Rochdale’s Paul Leary and Mark Walker entered the race to qualify for the 2008 World Long Distance Mountain Running Challenge on the Yorkshire 3 peaks.   Andy McDougal entered to try his first fell race, “jumping in at the deep end” as he put it.

After starting together, the Harriers separated out with McDougal and Leary being fastest.   The very rough, bouldery descent at Burbage Edge and low-soled footwear worked to Leary’s advantage, giving him a lead which McDougal was unable to recover.   Next home was Mark Walker, followed by John Mayall who took 7 minutes off his 2006 time.
