Last weekend members of Rochdale Harriers competed in wide variety of races.

The clear blue skys of Todmorden welcomed four of the men for the annual Shepherds’ Skyline fell race.  The route, which is well known for its ankle turning uneven surfaces, took its toll with many competitors taking a tumble on the day. Stephen Leak was on top form and made first Rochdale finisher, completing the 6.2 mile course with its two painful 600ft climbs in 58 min 20 sec.   Next were Mark Hayes (58.40),  John Mayall (62.08, 9 min faster than 2004) and Andy O’Sullivan MBE (65.53).

Andy McDougal travelled to the Lake District to take part in the Ullswater Trail race.   This event entailed runners being shipped over the lake on one of three crossings, before disembarking the Ullswater steamers and racing around the 12km course. McDougal finished 31st out of 291 in 68 mi 09 sec.   In the overall series of Lakeland trail races, Brenda  Robinson took the prize for 2nd female veteran 60 and Mark Walker and John Purdy were 5th and 27th in the male veteran 40 category.

Kris Robinson and Ray Dalby competed in the Alexandra Park 5K race.  In a field of 111 runners, Kris took 7th place in 18 min 10 sec and Ray posted 20 min 15 sec to finish 30th.

The next race is the South East Lancashire League cross country event in Heaton Park on Saturday.    At the most recent race in this league, Rochdale’s Carly Needham won, finishing some 3 minutes ahead of her closest rival.
