THE COLIN Robinson multi terrain race last Wednesday provided an ideal opportunity for Rochdale Harriers (pictured) to assess how their form has progressed over the past year.

The annual race, which raises considerable sums for charity, starts with a tight lap around Cowm reservoir at Whitworth and then loops uphill through the quarry overlooking Cown.  At 4.1 miles in length and with a mixture of road, slippery ascent and trippy trail, the route has something to test many aspect of a runner’s overall ability.

The race was won in convincing style by Rochdale’s Wajib Ali, finishing a clear minute ahead of second place Malcolm Fowler from Wilmslow Running Club.  Ali clocked 22 min 12 sec, some 158 seconds faster than his 2006 time.

For much of the race Matt Proctor, who finished 15th last year, was in second place behind Ali.  On the final ascent Matt lost a couple of places to Fowler (Wilmslow) and Jackson (Horwich) to finish 4th overall.  Evolving from a Junior to a Senior this year has worked well for Proctor, as lopping 199 seconds off his 2006 time clearly shows.  Overall Matt Proctor had the biggest improvement on last year’s time and the youngster shows great potential for the future.

In a double first act that is now becoming a regular feature of local racing, Rochdale’s Josefa Terim (pictured with Andy O’Sullivan on left and Colin Robinson right) joined Ali in the honours by being first lady finisher.  For much of the race Terim was neck and neck with Heather Corbishley of Rossendale Harriers.  Ultimately Josefa proved the stronger, beating Heather by 33 seconds and improving on her 2006 personal time by 168 seconds.

Ian Stainthorpe, who should have been resting ahead of the London Marathon, won the male veteran 45 category in a speedy 25 min 12 sec.

Meanwhile  Ian Holloway won the male veteran 55 category. David Schofield and Phil Roberts were newcomers to the V60 category and finished in impressive  first and second place. Ian Aitchison put in a terrific time and was 2nd male veteran 50.  Diane Winterburn and Christine Deasey, improving all the time, finished 3rd and 4th in the female veteran 40 category.

So overall how did Rochdale Harriers perform compared to last year?  Well all 9 of those who ran the race this year and last posted improved times this year.

The results for Rochdale Harriers were as follows.  The figure in brackets is the number of seconds improvement over their 2006 times
