Bury
XC, Red Rose League
Chesham Fields
17th November 2007
|
CHESHAM FIELDS in Bury hosted this season’s second fixture
in the Red Rose cross country league. The course was based on 1.2 mile, relatively flat, fast, and
it must be said tedious, laps around the fields. The Senior ladies race
involved three laps and the men five.
Junior courses were shorter.
Once again it was victory for Carly Needham in the ladies
race, pushing England international mountain runner Katie Ingram of
Horwich into second place by 56 seconds.
She won the 3.6 miler in 23 min 51 sec. Carly is upping the ante
in her next race by competing against strong cross country athletes from
a wider catchment area at Sefton Park, Liverpool. In the Under 15’s race, Rochdale’s Gina Thornton
faced competition from within the Harriers, namely Laura Langley.
Laura started off fast, leading Gina for much of the race.
In the later stages Gina gave everything she had to close the gap
and the two girls finished in an identical time of 17 min 0 sec.
The team-mate rivalry seemed to help both athletes perform well,
with Gina finishing significantly further up the pack than the week
before at Heaton Park. The Senior men’s team finished 8th with the counters in order: 33 Chris Leach, 36 Ian Roberts, 48 John Cook, 55 Andy McDougal, 60 Paul Leary and 86 Nigel Shaw. |
